Discover the best ways to move around the Big Apple

Home to millions and millions of people, learning how to move around New York can take a little effort, but once you know, you’ll be able to experience a truly wonderful time on your visit. To help you navigate the streets of this megapolis, we have compiled information on New York public transport:

New York Metro

The first way for getting around New York is, no doubt, taking the metro. You can avoid the traffic, shorten long distances, and even take care of miscellaneous tasks while riding on it, like checking your email, making your grocery lists, and drinking your coffee.

Spanning nearly 500 subway stations, the New York metro is one of the largest systems in the world (as measured by the number of stations). It’s also one of the busiest, but don’t let that fool you – metros run every few minutes for 24 hours a day. You’ll always find a space.

New York Bus

Over 6000 buses operate under the MTA (Metropolitan Transport Authority) as a New York public transport option and cover the city with more than 300 routes on the list.
Buses in the city are either local ones, which have more stops and are better for if you’re exploring in-borough, or express buses, which cater more to commuter routes from the outer boroughs.

Either way, you can head to a bus stop (It can be found every two or three blocks) and hop on the bus when it arrives.

New York Train

Several passenger train lines operate in New York, connecting with neighboring locales like New Jersey. They’re more helpful if you’re visiting from the outer boroughs or want to jump off at one of them, but either way, they tend to be good options for longer distances.

New York Taxi

The taxi must surely come to mind when you consider how to move around New York. Bright yellow and able to be hailed anywhere in the city, these vehicles take you where you want without worrying about other passengers.

If you see one on the road and the lights on top are illuminated, it’s open for passengers – attract the driver’s attention, and they’ll come down to pick you up.
