With more than 6000 buses operating at a given time in the city, a New York bus route is your safest option to enjoy the city’s sights while traveling through it. The subway is closed off for that, but though it is quicker, the New York bus will allow for more ease and systematization of travel.
Much like the metro system, the New York bus system operates on the same framework, though it also allows for cash in the form of the exact change in coins. Still, it’s much simpler and more functional to utilize the other options, which include the single New York bus tickets, the MetroCard, or the OMNY system, all of which are applicable on the metro.
For the single ticket, each ticket for the local bus will cost $2.90, which will build up as you move along. It’s a good option if you only need to get to one place, but even as tourists, that’s not often the case – usually, you’ll need more than one trip if you intend to go to and get back from whatever your destination is.
In that case, the OMNY is also a good option because it allows you to make transactions directly through your debit/credit cards with exactly the amounts you need.
But if you’re really interested in more options and a simpler process, you can use the MetroCard, which you can get at a station or a stop at a vending machine kiosk.
There, you can get it for $1, and it can be refilled when required. Plus, it works on the metro, too, making it doubly useful. You can get a 7-day package for $34 or a 30-day top-up for $132.
The New York bus map, making full use of the thousands of buses it owns, spans 322 routes, which have marked stops every two to three blocks. If you miss one bus, you can wait for the next one at the same station, but there are a ton of lines, even if that particular one isn’t what you need.
For reference, the lines run from M1 to Q32, with M1 going from Harlem to Soho, for example, M31 from Yorkville to Clinton, and even Q32 from Jackson Heights to Penn Station. The routes and the maps are available at most bus stops, and you can route out your intentions before the bus stops there, too.
Finally, there is the New York bus schedule, which is simple because, like most other public transport systems, the bus system also works 24/7 every day of the year.
However, since night shifts are less rushed, there are fewer people, and the lines are thus limited in terms of which ones are running and how much they’re being operated.
